Grant H. Garcia, MD

Dr. Grant H. Garcia is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist based in Seattle. Trained at the Hospital for Special Surgery - consistently ranked the top orthopedic residency program in the United States - and fellowship-trained at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Dr. Garcia brings subspecialty expertise in shoulder surgery, cartilage restoration, and return-to-sport care that is rare in the Pacific Northwest.

Training & Credentials

Dr. Garcia holds board certification in orthopedic surgery with a subspecialty certification in sports medicine. During his residency at HSS, he cared for players on the New York Giants, New York Mets, New York Rangers, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, US Tennis Team, and numerous collegiate athletes. He also completed a mini-shoulder fellowship in France with internationally renowned shoulder surgeons before returning to the U.S. for his sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at Rush.

Areas of Specialty

Dr. Garcia is one of the leading sports medicine specialists in Washington State, regularly consulted by colleagues and physical therapists for the most complex cases in the region. He performs many revision surgeries - cases where a previous procedure has failed - and is among the highest-volume surgeons in Washington State for the following procedures:

Patients travel from across the country for Dr. Garcia's cartilage restoration expertise. He is one of a small number of surgeons in the U.S. performing the full range of cartilage preservation procedures - offering younger, active patients meaningful alternatives to early joint replacement. He also treats elbow injuries including UCL reconstruction, elbow arthroscopy, and distal biceps repair, and has a dedicated pediatric sports medicine program.

Research, Innovation & Recognition

Dr. Garcia has authored over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has presented more than 60 academic papers worldwide and has authored book chapters on advanced sports medicine techniques. His work has been featured in ESPN.com, Orthopedics Today, and AAOS Now.

He works closely with leading medical device companies including Arthrex, Motusium, NewClips Technics, and Vericel (MACI) on product development, FDA testing, and surgeon training. He is a frequent national speaker, teaching other surgeons the advanced and minimally invasive techniques he has developed.

Team Physician Experience

Dr. Garcia has served as team physician at the highest levels of professional and amateur sport. He was an assistant team physician for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox, and during residency at HSS cared for athletes from the New York Giants, New York Mets, New York Rangers, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and the US Tennis Team. He currently serves as team physician for Mercer Island High School and Swim America - a fitting role for a physician who grew up on Mercer Island and was himself an All-American swimmer and high school team captain.

Background

Dr. Garcia grew up on Mercer Island, WA. During high school he became an All-American swimmer and captain of the men's swim team. He went on to captain the varsity swim team at Brown University before earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Outside of medicine, he enjoys time with his wife and two daughters, skiing, hiking, strength training, and travel.
